An abandoned house in Río Piedras, intervened by the artist, a work of art at the Museum of Art and Design of Miramar (MADMi), and an exhibition at Petrus Gallery, are the main elements of a video which highlights the most recent work an artist. This artist is William Bass Morales, one of the most sought-after young artists in the local scene. The latter has focused on creating abstract artwork.
Born in San Juan, Bass Morales studied at the School of Plastic Arts and Design of Puerto Rico, where he concentrated in Graphic Arts. He also studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where he received a scholarship and later became a professor. His work has been exhibited individually and collectively in different spaces in Puerto, Dominican Republic, New Jersey, New York, and Miami.
Bass Morales is part of Generación Reactiva (Reactive Generation), bringing together the best talent amongst young Puerto Rican artists. His work is being showcased at Petrus Gallery in his latest exhibition “Constancia” (Constance).
“Constancia” is the 6th virtual and face-to-face exhibition offered by Petrus Gallery during the COVID-19 pandemic. The show is accompanied by an exciting video. Through a dynamic interview, the artist narrates different instances of his work and tours the audience through the exhibition. To create the video, the film crew began their work in the town of Río Piedras. Specifically, in the university sector of Santa Rita, where Bass Morales created a sizeable natural mural on an abandoned house, in which the flora is the primary element.
Later, the video crew visited the MADMi, Museum of Art and Design of Miramar, to capture images of the artwork titled “Retroarcaica” (Retroarchaic), which is part of the exhibition “JUNTXS”.
“My technique is based on using the crayon to create shadows. With the spatula, I apply the acrylic to execute the piece as such. The multicolored theme of this piece reveals the tropics and our island and Caribbean identity,” says Bass Morales.
Bass Morales points out that his goal is to stay focused on painting. “I plan to continue exploring abstraction, which is an essential topic for me within the whole range that exists among young local artists. I like to experiment, give a little more shape to the language I’m using. “
In short, one must watch the video to realize that we are facing a tremendous young talent. As the founder of Petrus Gallery, Sylvia Villafañe, says, “We are always discovering and working with young talent, which represents the future of art in Puerto Rico.”
