About José Jorge Román
Studied at the School of Plastic Arts of Puerto Rico, received Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1991 with a concentration in Graphic Design. Studied pedagogy and curatorial studies at the doctoral level at the University of Valladolid, Spain. In 2008 obtained a Masters in Education specializing in Museum Studies and Archiving from Caribbean University. Thesis: Paradigms in the Panorama of Puerto Rican Plastic Arts Cultural Endeavors.
As a working artist, solo art exhibitions include: Apostrophe, 1997 and Recent Paintings, 1996. Participated in international exhibitions in Latin America, Europe and USA. Awards for painting over the past 20 years include: Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico, Exhibition of Contemporary Art, Honorable Mention, 2002; Ponce Art Museum, Acquisition Award, Young Artist Competition, PR, 2000; Basic Grant Program for the Arts / National Endowment for the Arts at the Institute of Culture, San Juan, PR, 1998; Basic Grant Program for the Arts / National Endowment for the Arts at the Institute of Culture, San Juan, PR, 1995; Alfonso Arana Foundation Drawing Prize, Museum of Art and History, San Juan, PR, 1994; National Endowment for the Financing of Cultural Affairs / National Endowment for the Arts, Institute of Culture, San Juan, PR, 1993; and Basic Grant Program for the Arts.
As a practicing painter José Jorge Roman has done public art projects under the directorship of the Urban Roads Authority. Roman created Project 2112 at the Minillas Tunnel exit on Avenida Baldorioty de Castro in San Juan. In this project Román makes a sound-based interpretation of the Rafael Hernandez ballad Lamento Borincano.
Roman currently teaches Humanities at the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras and and at the University of Turabo. He is currently developing an ambitious cultural project of contemporary art within a community context at LA15: Curatorial Center located in the heart of the Santurce art district of San Juan.
