About Andrés Meléndez
Andrés Meléndez, born on May 11, 1996, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and raised in Utuado, is an artist whose work captures the flow of time and the evolution of memories through vibrant colors and forms that defy perfection. A graduate in Graphic Arts from the University of Puerto Rico in Carolina, his work not only aims to portray exact details but also to evoke underlying emotions and experiences, creating an intimate connection with the viewer.
From the beginning, Andrés has made his mark in Puerto Rico, standing out in exhibitions and participating in collective exhibitions at the University of Puerto Rico and other renowned spaces. In 2018, his exhibition “IN PASSION WE TRUST” at the University of Puerto Rico in Carolina marked a milestone. The encounter with master Heriberto Nieves in 2018 was crucial, providing him with mentorship that formalized his career and artistic efforts. His participation in the “VORTICE” exhibition in 2022 with Heriberto Nieves and his school showcases the depth of his work and artistic evolution. Additionally, he was awarded the 2021 Design Contest Scholarship for the “Youth Medal,” recognizing his talent and contribution to Puerto Rican art.
Andrés’ statement reveals his fascination with time and memory, using the imperfect silhouette of a bird as a recurring symbol in his work to represent the constant movement of time. His upcoming exhibition, “Windows to Madrid,” serves as a meditation on these themes, inspired by family traditions and the contemporary reinterpretation of memories.
Represented by Galería Petrus and working from his studio in Trujillo Alto, Andrés Meléndez aims to bring Puerto Rican art to an international stage. Through his art, he invites reflection on the ephemeral nature of life and the impermanence of experiences, leaving a lasting mark on the world of contemporary art.
