About Abey Charrón
Born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico on June 29, 1973. Abey R. Charrón Walker is a photographer who has an extensive and diverse experience in the world of professional photography and in the arts. He has been featured in different publications: El Nuevo Día, one of Puerto Rico’s top newspapers. The combination of traditional and unconventional elements included in his works became a personal trade that highlights cultural icons of puertorrican & caribbean life. In 1992 he studied photography in Everett WA and has participated in over 40 shows.
In 2002 he was invited by the government of the Dominican Republic to do a solo show called “Loiza” a collection of faces of Santurce, Puerto Rico at the University of San Pedro de Macorís. In 2003 the use of tin roof from old homes to print and carry the images of people from Santurce, documenting them and their struggles in this neighborhood has become a signature technique of his works in “Loiza+Calle”. In 2010, 15 of his pieces were sold to the new W Hotel in Vieques, Puerto Rico, he was chosen from hundreds of artist. The work of this Photographer has been chosen to participate in the prestigious Biennial Photography Exhibit of Puerto Rico at the Museo de las Americas from 1998 to 2010. At the end of 2010 Abey sold out his solo show called “Rejas” iron works, presenting a social critique of the confinement in which we are forced to live in our own homes because of crime.
In 2012 he was invited to participate in a Eerie Show in Paris France with his series “Isla del Encanto” photos that analyze the lack of security we have in Puerto Rico. 2013 Charron’s series “Life in the Tropics” documenting Caribbean decay, was chosen to be a part of “La Muestra Nacional de Arte 2012” at the “Museo de las Americas” one of the biggest art show in the Caribbean. In 2013 he received a special invite to participate in Santurce es Ley 4, Street Art Festival in Santurce Puerto Rico, with his piece “Niño Trabajando Para un Mejor Puerto Rico” (70’ X1 20’). 2014 Charrón is part of the show “Tremendous Dynamite” in Berlin with his series “PR Killers ”
